Plastic Free July – Tips to Reduce Plastic Use

7th June 2022

Could you avoid using a single bit of plastic for a whole month? It sounds impossible in today’s society but we’re here to tell you that it is very much doable and Plastic Free July is here to help you get started.

What is Plastic Free July?

Plastic Free July is a key initiative formed by the Plastic Free Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation founded in 2017. A global movement that encourages people to come together and help end plastic pollution. The goal is to avoid using disposable plastic for a month, yep that means no more to-go coffee cups, reusable is the way forward.

According to IUCN, at least 14 million tons of plastic ends up in the ocean every year, making up 80% of all marine debris. Plastic has become the number one product people use daily but it’s time to say no to single-use plastic! Big changes start with small steps and they may be simpler than you think. Here’s some ideas on how you can reduce your plastic footprint.

Choose to reuse

There are many ways you can reuse items that would usually be chucked away, from bringing your own reusable cup to your local coffee shop to reusable shopping bags. It’s time to ditch the throw-away culture. You could reuse containers for storage and even get creative by turning old clothes into craft projects; make a tote bag out of a t-shirt.

Paper over plastic

Paper bags, paper straws, paper tape… there are now many sustainable alternatives to items originally made from plastic. Did you know paper straws decompose within 2-6 months compared to plastic straws which take over 200 years! Paper can also be very easily recycled to create new products, saving them from the dreaded landfill.

Embrace a naked bin

Now this might sound a bit strange, but think about it, do you really need a liner inside your bin? Stop using bin liners and embrace a naked bin that you wash out instead. If this sounds a bit too drastic you could line your bin with newspaper or opt for biodegradable bin bags. Whatever you decide, plastic bin bags are a no no.

Always choose loose

Why choose pre-packaged fruit and veg when you can buy them loose? Choosing loose produce not only reduces the amount of packaging wasted but can also help to minimise food waste, as you’re more likely to buy what you need rather than filling up a bag aimlessly. Think about it, do you really need to buy a bunch of bananas in plastic packaging… you don’t eat the skin anyway! If you really want to bag up your fruit and veg, invest in a good reusable produce bag made from organic cotton or recycled materials. Just make sure you remember to bring it with you every time.

Sustainable business packaging

For businesses plastic seems the obvious choice when it comes to packaging, but there is a more sustainable option… corrugated cardboard. Different products require different packaging solutions but using corrugated cardboard reduces the negative impact on the environment whilst being durable and cost-effective still.

At ABC Pack we understand the importance of reducing the world’s reliance on plastic and helping businesses reduce their plastic footprint.
